Florence The Institute of Italian Studies is located in the heart of historic Florence, exactly half way between the Central Train Station and the Duomo. With the affiliation of the Centro Lorenzo de' Medici and the Art Institute of Florence , I.I.S. is able to offer the widest range of classes offered by an American program in Italy with an international student body. School sites are all centrally located. They include three studio art facilities, classrooms, library, computer lab, cafeteria, and administrative offices. A semester in Florence is a complete experience into the many splendors, past and present, of a region which has contributed significantly to Western Culture. I.I.S. offers a wide range of new possibilities and ideas to students majoring in any subject: Studio Art, Art History, Architecture, Communication, Political Science, International Business, and History of Fashion and Italian Language and Literature. Besides the magnificent location of the school, another highlight of the program is the international character. A wonderful mix of cultures, languages and customs from all over the world creates an atmosphere where students share their experiences and enrich their cultural background in an internationally diverse campus. A typical day includes 6 hrs. of class/studio study and language study, and visits to historic sites and museums. Students immerse themselves in the Italian culture by living in residential areas. Daily walks between classes, studios, and housing occur in the charming surroundings of historic, cobblestone Florence. Food shopping at local outdoor markets, recreation activities along the Arno River, and cultural events are typical affairs. Weekends are opportunities for train travel, study, and hikes in the Tuscany countryside. At the end of each semester, the school holds an art exhibition in which students show their work. An invitation card is made by the graphic design students as part of the class and sent to artists, schools, etc. Many local personalities of the cultural world are invited to share with our students this very important and educational experience. Credits are earned on the semester hour basis. A semester lasts 15 weeks. A credit requires 3 contact hours per week for Liberal Arts courses (45 total contact hours) and 6 contact hours per week for Studio Art courses (90 total contact hours). The distribution of that time between class activities (such as lectures, laboratories, field trips, etc.) and outside preparation varies from course to course. All the studio art courses have a number of open studio hours which vary from course to course. The regular semester load carries 12-16 credits. A semester load of 12 - 15/16 credits requires one course in Italian Language. Here is an overview of the tentative schedule of courses offered for the Fall and Spring semester. In the acceptance packet the student will receive the complete schedule including times, dates, and other information. Courses listed at the right are not offered every semester, please consult current program insert in brochure mailing.
