Institute of Italian Studies History & Accreditation The Institute of Italian Studies (IIS), in affiliation with Marist College and the Lorenzo De’ Medici (LDM), is one of the oldest and most experienced international programs in Italy for study abroad by college, university and institute students. Marist College, an accredited U.S. institution, has developed a branch campus in Florence, Italy to become the first school in collaboration with LDM to offer study abroad students a U.S. four-year bachelor’s degree program in Florence. IIS historically has been successfully enrolling students in Italy for over 20 years. With the partnership of IIS and Marist degree program, students will complete their study abroad program with a transcript which all courses (coding), syllabus, degree curriculum, and program assessments are in the same format, approved, accredited, and issued as the Marist main campus are issued in the U.S., ensuring high academic quality and commitment to excellence. The Italian Host partnership, Lorenzo De’ Medici (LDM), formed in 1973 as one of the first centers in Florence to teach Italian as a foreign language. The school then branched out to offer Studio Art courses, and has now become Italy’s leading study abroad institution with centers in Florence, Tuscania, and Rome. 1984, the Institute of Italian Studies was formed in the United States and registered in the state of Iowa as a non-profit institution of higher education with a branch office in Florence. The Institute of Italian Studies (IIS), as partners with LDM, functions as the enrolling institute providing a variety of services for the student such as the processing of course registrations, billing, housing, travel, orientation, advising, faculty coordinating, transcript issuing, and other study abroad related functions. Marist College, founded in 1929, is recognized by Princeton Review, U.S. News & World Report and others for educational excellence and leadership in the use of technology in the learning process. Marist College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and also by the United States Department of Justice. Marist is also approved by the New York State Education Department, approved for holders of New York State Scholarships, including Regents Scholarships, State War Service Scholarships, and Scholar Incentive Awards. The College holds membership in the New York State unit of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, Association of Colleges and Universities of the State of New York, the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and the Association of American Colleges. The Institute of Italian Studies is authorized and registered in the State of Iowa and in Italy to conduct business as a non-profit study abroad program for U.S. students to obtain relevant course work at corresponding schools in Italy (12/1/84). Both the Lorenzo De’ Medici and the Institute of Italian Studies’ branch office are accredited by the Ministry of Education in Italy (Ministrero della Pubblica Istruzione) and Ministry of Universities and Research (Ministero dell’Universita e della Ricerca). LDM is registered with the U.S. Middle States Commission on Higher Education as a Branch Campus of Marist College, a U.S. accredited degree granting institution. Both IIS and LDM participate and hold memberships in several Educational Associations such as NAFSA, SECUSSA, CCIS, ASILS, FEDE, FIYTO, and WYSE. IIS and LDM are affiliated with over twenty-five U.S. and international institutions currently that successfully enroll students. Mission Statement and Non-Discrimination Policy The Institute of Italian Studies’ international faculty is committed to knowledge, academic excellence, and the pursuit of international cultural understanding in a safe environment. They provide this by offering the benefits of fully-equipped classrooms, computers, educational multimedia equipment, spacious studio art facilities, social activities and advising services. The social activities and optional organized field trips to Venice, Rome and selected Tuscany’s towns are an integral aspect of the program providing on-site cultural experiences. The faculty utilizes the city’s wealth of museums, markets, businesses, and historical landmarks for classroom field trips. The Institute’s goal for each student is to obtain a meaningful educational experience which can be of value in the future.
