Summer The Institute of Italian Studies (IIS) is one of the few Italian studies programs with an international student body and faculty. The Florence facilities are all centrally located. IIS-Marist is affiliated with the Lorenzo de' Medici and the Art Institute of Florence. Institute's sites include three Studio Art facilities providing centers for Jewelry, Graphic Arts, Painting, Sculpture, Textiles, Video, Restoration, Photography, Architecture, Fresco, and Drawing. Students visit museums, villas and gardens. Classrooms, computer lab, library, administrative offices and cafeteria are centrally located between the Duomo and the Central train station. Florence and the whole Tuscany region offers you the unfolding beauty of both its Renaissance treasures and charming countryside. Late Spring or Summer are ideal times to enjoy the city of Florence and make the most of the experience. Several field trips organized by the school will give you the opportunity to travel on pastoral country roads and enjoy tiny medieval villages scattered in the hills around Florence and Siena. Florence itself will be your classroom: Half of all the Art History classes are held in museums, and the masterpieces of architecture are studied on site. A typical day includes 6 hrs. of class/studio study, language study, visits to historical sites and museums. Students immerse themselves in the Italian culture by living near residential areas. Daily walks between classes, studios, and housing occur in the surroundings of historic cobblestone Florence. Shopping for food at the San Lorenzo market and local outdoor markets, recreation activities, and daily cultural events are typical affairs. Weekends are opportunities for train travel, study, and hikes in the countryside. The Summer sessions are ideal for students to enjoy and participate in all of the outdoor city events and festivals, such as an evening film festival held in the beautiful Forte Belvedere or the Estate Fiesolana in the Roman Amphitheater. Outstanding local events include the Summer festival in Fiesole, Feast Day of St. John (16th century historical soccer), and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (International music festival). The Institute offers three different summer sessions with Italian language courses optional. Students may choose to enroll in one, two or all sessions. You may choose from Italian language for six credit hours, a combination of two (3) credit hour courses for six credits, or one (3) credit hour course. Liberal Art and Studio Art courses meet twelve hours per week. The Intensive Italian program ( 20 hrs. of instruction per week plus weekly mandatory seminars and visits) offers a complete immersion into the Italian culture and language.
Application deadlines for summer sessions are April 1 for Session I and Session II, and June 1 for Session III. Final payment deadline and all forms are due by April 15. A course schedule with times, days, sections, etc. will be mailed with the student's information packet upon acceptance into the program. All courses are in English except language and noted courses.
