PROGRAMS     Florence | Tuscania | Rome | Three Cities | Summer | Adult Education

Tuscania Program & Professional
Study Certificate Program

Why Choose Tuscania?

  • Tuscania provides an authentic study abroad experience for serious students who are dedicated to immersion in Italian language and culture

  • By enrolling in a smaller program located in a quaint Italian town, students receive personalized attention, attend smaller classes, and have daily interaction with the community to create a close-knit educational environment

  • Tuscania is perfect for friends or couples who like to take life at a slower pace and wish to enroll in a study abroad program together

  • Students can enjoy a glass of wine, good food, and good conversation in a local restaurant while practicing Italian and learning local customs

  • Tuscania annually celebrates two prestigious international music and theater festivals

  • Students have the choice between a traditional semester long program or a year long Professional Study Certificate program

After more than 20 years of successful study abroad experience in Florence, IIS in affiliation with Lorenzo de' Medici School is proud to offer a new program in Tuscania, Italy.  Tuscania, a small Medieval hilltop village not far from Rome, provides a unique experience for those students who wish to have a more intimate and "authentic" study abroad experience. Thanks to the size of the town and its geographical position, students live their study abroad experience in a more familiar and human environment - a dimension that is difficult to find today in the big cities - an environment that has not yet lost its curiosity for the foreigner, and expresses itself in an authentic welcoming art.

In Tuscania, you walk to class through a town of cobblestone streets where church bells ring and children stroll to school while elderly residents chat in the park.  The town is a true gem for a full immersion Italian cultural experience.

Immersed in first class natural scenery, on the edge of the Maremma area of Viterbo, Lake Bolsena and the Thyrrenium Sea, Tuscania, with its numerous vestiges of the fascinating Etruscan civilization, as well as important Romanic and Medieval remains, is an exclusive haven which time has left untouched.

Students take classes in an elegant 17th century building, located in the old town center on the medieval walls close to the main gates of the town.  Facilities include a computer room, studio art labs, and a library for student use.

The Tuscania program is geared towards humanities, social sciences, studio arts, media studies and Italian language. Except for Italian language, courses are taught in English. Many courses, in addition to the theoretical work in the classroom, will provide practical seminars with excursions and guided visits.  The academic program and the courses are run by highly-skilled and experienced faculty.

Most of the subjects will be centered on the territorial resources or connected to them: the Etruscan civilization in its various aspects, the artistic wealth of Tuscania during the different periods, and the gastronomic tradition of the Tuscan region. Thanks to the sponsorship of local authorities, and in collaboration with the University of Viterbo, students are able to actively participate in the cultural and social life of the region, thus reflecting the true spirit of study abroad.

Credits are earned on the semester hour basis. A semester lasts 15 weeks. A credit requires 3 contact hours per week for Liberal Arts courses (45 total contact hours) and 6 contact hours per week for Studio Art courses (90 total contact hours). The distribution of that time between class activities (such as lectures, laboratories, field trips, etc.) and outside preparation varies from course to course. All the studio art courses have a number of open studio hours which vary from course to course. The regular semester load carries 12-16 credits.  A semester load of 12 - 15/16 credits requires one course in Italian Language. Tuscania also offers a unique Professional Study Certificate program.  The website has an overview of the tentative schedule of courses offered for the Fall and Spring semesters. In the acceptance packet the student will receive the complete schedule including times, dates, and other information. Courses listed at the right are not offered every semester.  Please consult current program insert in brochure mailing.

Tuscania Professional Study Certificate Program

The Professional Study Certificate (PSC) Program provides each student with the opportunity to gain experience in a professional career while earning credits studying abroad.  During the course of one year, students will broaden their knowledge by gaining first-hand experience of various professional and artistic endeavors through pre-planned classes which provide the student with an optimal course sequence while learning their trade.  Classes are taught by critically-acclaimed professionals and are supported by the surrounding community.

The Tuscania Program offers Professional Study Certificates in the following areas:

  • Film/TV

  • Theatre

  • Lighting Design

  • Archeology

Participants in the Film/TV Professional Study Certificates will take active part in the production of movies, documentaries, and other media formats through a collaboration with the Technical Studios and A.I.C. (Director of Photography Association) of Cinecittá in Rome.  Projects that students work on have the possibility of being distributed to the public through TV Networks.

Theatre students have the opportunity to produce a performance in conjunction with area theatres, under the guidance of a director and other professionals.  Shows may also be produced in affiliation with the local theatre festival in Tuscania, which is associated with the Royal National Theatre of London and the Burgtheater of Vienna. In addition, students in the Theatre Professional Study Certificates program will have the opportunity to create their own performance project.

In the Lighting Design Professional Study Certificates program, students will have the opportunity to collaborate with STUDIO 2 in Viterbo.  Working with these professionals, students will learn the spectrum of technical and environmental effects which can recreate artistic styles and interpretations of architectural periods.  Opportunities exist to learn theatrical, public, and interior lighting design.

Students wishing to gain experience in archaeology will find a unique opportunity in Tuscania.  The Archaeology Professional Study Certificates program partners LdM students with the Etruscan Archaeology Department of the University of Florence.  Students gain access to excavation sites already in progress, while learning first-hand the various techniques and theories of stratigraphy and excavation.

In the area of Art Conservation, Lorenzo de Medici students have the ability to work on the restoration of invaluable works of art provided by the medieval setting in Tuscania.
